The Supreme Court of India has stepped up its scrutiny of reforms being implemented by the National Testing Agency (NTA) following concerns over examination irregularities and alleged paper leaks in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).
A Bench comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe stressed that long-term institutional reforms are necessary to restore confidence in India's largest medical entrance examination. The Court observed that recurring problems cannot be addressed through temporary or ad hoc measures and emphasized the need for systemic changes.
During the hearing, the Court directed the Union Government to submit detailed affidavits outlining the progress made in implementing examination reforms. The Bench indicated that it would continue monitoring developments throughout the year to ensure that corrective measures are effectively institutionalized.
The Supreme Court also sought clarity on proposals relating to computer-based testing (CBT), cybersecurity safeguards, examination security mechanisms, and administrative reforms within the NTA. The Court highlighted that examination integrity is a matter of public importance affecting millions of students and their families.
The Centre assured the Court that it is committed to strengthening the examination framework and preventing future irregularities. Government representatives informed the Bench that multiple reforms are already underway, including enhanced security protocols, stronger monitoring systems, and organizational restructuring within the NTA.
The Court's intervention follows widespread concerns regarding examination management and allegations of paper leaks that have prompted calls for greater accountability and transparency in the conduct of national-level entrance examinations.
By choosing to closely monitor the reform process, the Supreme Court has signaled its intention to ensure that structural weaknesses are addressed comprehensively rather than through short-term corrective actions. The matter is expected to remain under judicial scrutiny as the government and NTA continue implementing reforms aimed at safeguarding the credibility of NEET.
