Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has underscored the transformative role of technology in India's judicial system, describing digital innovation as a key driver of efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in justice delivery.
Speaking at a recent conference on technology and the legal profession, the CJI highlighted the judiciary's significant progress in adopting digital tools, including e-filing systems, virtual hearings, AI-assisted research tools, digital case management platforms, and data-driven judicial administration. He observed that these initiatives have helped reduce geographical barriers and improved access to legal resources for lawyers and litigants across the country.
The CJI noted that technological advancements have democratized the legal profession by enabling lawyers from smaller towns and remote regions to access legal databases, research platforms, and court proceedings that were previously concentrated in metropolitan centers. According to him, technology has created a more level playing field within the justice ecosystem.
Addressing the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Justice Surya Kant emphasized that AI can augment judicial intelligence and administrative efficiency by assisting with legal research, transcription, translation, data analytics, and case management. However, he cautioned that AI should function only as a support mechanism and must not replace the human elements of adjudication.
He reiterated that judicial decision-making involves constitutional values, moral reasoning, empathy, and contextual understanding that cannot be replicated by algorithms. While AI can improve court administration and reduce procedural delays, the final responsibility for delivering justice must remain with judges.
The CJI also highlighted ongoing efforts to modernize judicial infrastructure through digital reforms, including paperless court systems, integrated data repositories, and technology-enabled case tracking mechanisms. These initiatives form part of a broader vision to build a more efficient, transparent, and citizen-centric judiciary.
The remarks reflect the judiciary's commitment to leveraging technological innovation while maintaining constitutional safeguards, judicial independence, and public trust in the justice system. As India continues to expand its digital governance framework, the judiciary's balanced approach to AI and technology is expected to shape future legal and regulatory discussions concerning legal technology and access to justice.
