A court in Kalyan, Maharashtra, has granted bail to Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who was arrested in connection with the alleged assault of doctors and medical staff at a civic-run hospital in Dombivli.
The incident, which occurred earlier this month at the KDMC-run Shastrinagar Hospital, triggered widespread outrage among the medical fraternity. According to reports, Mhatre and several supporters allegedly confronted and assaulted healthcare personnel following a dispute concerning the treatment and referral of a pregnant patient.
Videos of the incident circulated widely on social media, leading to demands for immediate legal action. Doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff across Kalyan-Dombivli reportedly suspended routine services and staged protests, citing concerns over workplace safety and violence against healthcare professionals.
Following public pressure and complaints lodged by hospital staff, police registered a case and arrested Mhatre. The arrest drew significant attention because of his position as an elected representative.
On July 14, a local court in Kalyan granted bail to Mhatre on a cash bond of ₹50,000. While granting relief, the court allowed his release pending further investigation and trial proceedings.
The matter continues to remain under scrutiny as healthcare associations and civil society groups seek stronger legal protections for medical personnel against violence in hospitals.
The case highlights the recurring issue of assaults on healthcare workers and raises broader questions about accountability, law enforcement, and the implementation of safeguards for medical professionals performing public duties.
