A Delhi court has granted seven days' interim bail to Sharjeel Imam, one of the accused in the larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots, enabling him to attend the weddings of his cousins scheduled in Delhi and Bihar.
The court observed that the marriages had been verified by the Investigating Officer and noted that this was only the second interim bail application filed by Imam for attending family weddings. Taking into consideration the verified family circumstances, the court allowed temporary release for a limited period.
According to reports, the interim bail has been granted from 4 October to 10 October 2026. The relief is subject to compliance with the conditions imposed by the court, including furnishing the required bond and surety.
Sharjeel Imam has been in judicial custody in connection with the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and other provisions. The case relates to allegations surrounding the communal violence that occurred in Northeast Delhi in February 2020.
The interim bail order does not affect the merits of the main criminal proceedings, which continue to remain pending before the courts. The decision reflects the judiciary's consideration of temporary humanitarian grounds while maintaining the ongoing legal process.
