Allahabad HC Orders IB Probe into Four Lucknow Lawyers; Flags Alleged Lawyer-Police Property Grabbing Nexus
The Allahabad High Court has ordered an inquiry by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) into the backgrounds, financial records, and activities of four Lucknow-based advocates who have been accused of involvement in incidents of violence within court premises. The direction came during proceedings relating to alleged attacks on lawyers at the Lucknow District Court.
Taking serious note of allegations suggesting the existence of a nexus between certain members of the legal fraternity and police personnel, the Court observed that the time had come to identify and isolate the “black sheep” operating within the Bar. The Bench expressed concern that some individuals may be misusing their legal credentials to engage in unlawful activities, including alleged property grabbing and intimidation.
The Court directed that the inquiry should examine the advocates’ assets, income tax records, professional conduct, and any links with criminal elements. The objective, according to the Court, is to determine whether legal practice is being used as a cover for activities inconsistent with the dignity and responsibilities of the profession.
The directions were issued in the backdrop of ongoing scrutiny of incidents of violence and misconduct reported within the Lucknow court complex. The Court underscored that the legal profession occupies a position of trust and that any criminal infiltration into the system poses a serious threat to the administration of justice.
The High Court further indicated that the investigation should assess allegations of collaboration between certain advocates and police officials in disputes involving property and land. Such allegations, if established, would raise serious concerns regarding abuse of authority and obstruction of justice.
Emphasising the need to preserve public confidence in the justice delivery system, the Court observed that advocates are officers of the court and must uphold the rule of law. It stressed that professional status cannot shield any individual from scrutiny where credible allegations of misconduct exist.
The matter remains under consideration, and the Court is expected to review the findings of the inquiry in subsequent hearings.
