The dispute surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal continues to engage the attention of the Supreme Court of India. The matter concerns appeals filed against the inclusion and deletion of names from electoral rolls following a large-scale revision exercise conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
In a recent filing before the Supreme Court, the ECI informed the Court that more than 37 lakh appeals remain pending before appellate tribunals established to adjudicate disputes arising from the revision process. According to the Commission, approximately 38.20 lakh appeals were filed, while only about 1.02 lakh appeals have been disposed of so far.
The appellate mechanism was introduced pursuant to directions issued during earlier proceedings relating to concerns over voter roll accuracy and allegations of wrongful exclusions. Multiple tribunals headed by retired judicial officers were constituted to examine challenges relating to both voter deletions and inclusions.
The Supreme Court has previously sought detailed information from the Election Commission regarding the number of appeals filed, disposed of, and pending before the tribunals. The Court's continuing oversight reflects concerns regarding the effective functioning of the appellate process and the need to safeguard electoral rights.
The dispute has attracted significant public attention due to the large number of voters affected by the revision exercise. Petitioners have raised concerns regarding delays in adjudication and the potential impact on eligible voters, while the Election Commission has maintained that the revision process is intended to ensure accurate and updated electoral rolls.
The proceedings remain pending before the Supreme Court, which is expected to continue examining the status of the appeals process and the measures adopted by the Election Commission to address the backlog. The outcome of the case may have broader implications for electoral roll revision exercises and voter grievance redressal mechanisms across India.
