The Gates Foundation has completed an independent external review into its past engagements with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein and has announced a series of governance reforms following the findings.
The review, conducted by law firm WilmerHale, examined interactions between the foundation, its leadership, and Epstein between 2011 and 2014. According to the foundation, investigators reviewed extensive documentation and conducted dozens of interviews as part of the inquiry.
The review found no evidence that the Gates Foundation made payments to Epstein, participated in any criminal activity, or knowingly facilitated any unlawful conduct. The investigation also concluded that proposed philanthropic initiatives involving Epstein did not result in any formal partnership or financial arrangement benefiting him.
However, the review highlighted that foundation officials and Bill Gates maintained contact with Epstein despite concerns raised by some staff members regarding reputational risks associated with the relationship. Meetings reportedly focused on potential philanthropic projects and fundraising initiatives, though none ultimately materialized.
In response to the findings, the Gates Foundation's governing board approved a number of governance reforms designed to strengthen oversight and improve accountability. These measures include enhanced due diligence procedures, centralized vetting of philanthropic partners and intermediaries, clearer escalation pathways for reputational and ethical concerns, and stronger internal review mechanisms.
Foundation leadership stated that the reforms are intended to reinforce public trust and ensure that future partnerships undergo rigorous scrutiny. The organization emphasized that transparency, integrity, and accountability remain central to its mission.
The review comes amid continued public scrutiny of Bill Gates' past association with Epstein. Gates has previously described the relationship as a mistake and stated that he was unaware of Epstein's criminal conduct beyond what was publicly known at the time.
The Gates Foundation noted that the newly approved governance framework will help strengthen institutional safeguards and align its operations with evolving expectations for nonprofit governance and ethical oversight.
