Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant addressed the BRICS Chief Justices' Forum hosted by the Supreme Court of India in New Delhi, bringing together Chief Justices, Presidents of Supreme Courts, and senior judicial leaders from BRICS member states and partner countries.
Delivering the welcome address, CJI Surya Kant described the Forum as “a modern fabric woven with traditional threads,” underscoring the shared commitment of participating nations to uphold justice while responding to emerging legal and societal challenges.
The CJI emphasized that the participating judicial leaders represent not merely individual jurisdictions but a collective community of judicial minds united by constitutional values, the rule of law, and the pursuit of equitable justice. He observed that the Forum presents an opportunity to write a new chapter in international legal cooperation by blending established legal wisdom with modern innovations.
The three-day Forum focused on key issues including mediation in international commercial disputes, cross-border enforcement of arbitral awards, artificial intelligence in judicial administration, and the judiciary’s role in promoting sustainable development.
During bilateral meetings with judicial leaders from Russia, China, Egypt, Indonesia, South Africa, the UAE, Iran, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Uzbekistan, discussions centered on judicial cooperation, exchange programmes, arbitration, mediation, commercial courts, and technology-driven improvements in justice delivery.
CJI Surya Kant also supported deeper collaboration among BRICS nations in the field of dispute resolution, including proposals aimed at creating common platforms for arbitration and mediation to facilitate efficient settlement of international commercial disputes.
The Forum is expected to strengthen judicial dialogue, promote exchange of best practices, and deepen cooperation among participating countries on emerging legal and institutional challenges in an increasingly interconnected world.
