Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has requested ₹100 crore in financial assistance from the Central Government to expedite the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Unauthorised Colonies in Delhi Awas Adhikar Yojana (PM-UDAY), a flagship initiative aimed at granting property rights to residents of unauthorized colonies across the national capital.

According to official statements, the requested funds will support the first phase of the scheme's rollout and help accelerate the processing of ownership documentation for residents living in 1,511 unauthorized colonies in Delhi.

The PM-UDAY scheme was introduced to address long-standing concerns surrounding land ownership and property rights in unauthorized colonies. Many residents have occupied properties for decades without formal ownership records, limiting their ability to access institutional credit, secure property transactions, or obtain certain civic benefits.

The Delhi Government has emphasized that additional financial support is necessary to strengthen implementation mechanisms, improve administrative efficiency, and facilitate the issuance of ownership documents. The move is expected to benefit a substantial segment of Delhi's population residing in informal settlements.

The significance of the PM-UDAY scheme extends beyond housing regularization. Legal recognition of property ownership can increase security of tenure, encourage infrastructure development, improve urban planning outcomes, and promote economic activity by enabling property owners to leverage their assets for financial purposes.

From a governance perspective, the scheme represents a major effort to integrate unauthorized colonies into the formal urban framework. Regularization of such colonies may also facilitate better delivery of municipal services, including water supply, sanitation, roads, and public utilities.

The funding request comes as the Delhi Government seeks to accelerate implementation and ensure that eligible residents receive the intended benefits of the scheme without administrative delays. If approved, the financial assistance could significantly advance the formalization of property rights in Delhi's unauthorized colonies.

The development highlights the continuing policy focus on urban housing rights, land regularization, and inclusive urban development in the National Capital Territory.
